CREATE
a Beat!
was founded
February 12, 2003 by a group of individuals interested in providing a broad
variety of learning experiences in the arts to the people and the community of
Pampa, Texas. Pampa lies in a rural part of the Texas Panhandle. It
is the county seat and largest town in Gray County Texas. It is located at
the junction of U.S. highway 60 and State highways 70, 152, and 273, in the
northwestern part of the county. Economic recession, decreases in the oil
industry and industrial cut backs have caused the city to see a population
decrease from nearly 20,000 in 1990 to approximately 17,900 in 2000. It is
home to many fine cultural organizations, including the Pampa Fine Arts
Association, Pampa Concert Association, ACT I Theatrical Group, Pampa Civic
Ballet, White Deer Land Museum and Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center.
In
1996 President Clinton's Committee on the Arts and Humanities released a report
entitled "Coming Up Taller." This report found that the positive influence
of the arts and humanities addressed many issues of concern for parents,
educators, and communities, such as: the well-being of children, school success,
safety, constructive use of after-school and summer time, community connections,
and workforce preparation. |
